Cat Care

Cats are Special and Need Specialized Care!

Routine health care refers to the non-emergency, general care that is needed to keep your cat healthy throughout its life. This includes routine veterinary care for vaccinations, parasite control, dental care, proper nutrition, grooming, and protection from household hazards.

Importance of Veterinary Care

Adult cats should have a complete veterinary examination at least once a year. Kittens need veterinary visits usually every 3 to 4 weeks until they are about 4 months old. Geriatric cats (more than 7 to 8 years old) should see their veterinarian twice a year or more frequently because illness is more common in older pets and should be identified sooner to provide proper treatment. We may recommend a wellness schedule for your pet, such as routine blood tests to monitor for early kidney or thyroid disease.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a service that we added in 2017. This technology uses liquid nitrogen, targeted through a small, handheld device. The liquid nitrogen serves to "freeze" the target tissue. This allows us to remove smaller lumps and bumps with little to no anesthesia.

Diagnostic Laboratory Services

We offer a wide variety of laboratory services. We perform the majority of the services at the clinic, so results are available on the day that they are performed. Some tests must be performed at an outside laboratory. Outside lab results are usually available in 48-72 hours.

Diagnostic Radiology

X-rays allow us to see the size and shape of many internal organs and bones, as well as any foreign bodies that your pet may have swallowed. We can administer barium and other contrast agents to help highlight many conditions. Through x-rays, we can diagnose organ enlargement, tumors, bladder or kidney stones, broken bones, arthritic conditions, intervertebral disc disease, hip dysplasia, as well as other conditions that may be present. We offer these services through the Seville Wadsworth, Southern Medina, Canal Fulton Jackson, and Orrville Veterinary Clinic. All of these veterinary hospitals are equipped with full radiographic capabilities, including the ability to perform contrast studies when indicated.

Kitten Education

Everybody loves kittens! We strive to educate pet owners about their newest family members. We cover many topics such as housebreaking, vaccination schedules, dental care, flea and tick control, heartworm prevention, pet proofing of your home, and several ideas to ensure quality care of your pet. We have a kitten starter kit to send home following your first visit with your new pet.

Laser Therapy

Our laser therapy unit adds a great, non-invasive therapy to our toolbox. This laser therapy unit uses various wavelengths of light, generally in the "red" spectrum, to deliver energy to the affected tissue. This energy and light serves to stimulate blood flow to the tissue, resulting in better oxygenation of the affected tissue. In addition, it causes increased release of ATP, the energy source used at the cellular level to promote healing. Typically, cold laser therapy requires multiple treatments, with results often noticeable after the first treatment.

Microchip Identification Service

We sympathize with any family that has had a pet disappear. We can place a small microchip under the skin of your pet for identification purposes should your pet become lost. Using a scanner, each pet can be identified and then returned to their family, but only if a microchip is present

Ophthalmology

Eye care is another critical component to the care of your pet. Changes to the appearance of the eye can be an indication of several systemic diseases. We are able to perform glaucoma screening using tonometry (eye pressure). We can also evaluate the eye and the surrounding ocular tissue using specialized medical equipment. Several additional tests can be performed to evaluate tear production and the integrity of the cornea (the clear covering of the eye).

Orthopedic Services

Lameness is also a very common problem in our pet population. We offer complete orthopedic evaluations and treatment on an out patient basis. Further testing, such as: diagnostic x-ray services, and surgical procedures including cranial cruciate ligament repair, femoral head resection, and fracture repair can be performed at our Seville Veterinary Clinic or our Orrville Veterinary Clinic. They perform many examinations each year on animals that are lame or limping. Many times radiographs are necessary to evaluate the limbs, pelvis, and spine. We offer OFA certification. The OFA program is designed to help detect and reduce the incidence of conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Our orthopedic surgical services include: fracture repair (including intramedullary bone pinning), FHO (a surgical correction for hip dysplasia), cruciate repair (like ACL repair), and wedge osteotomy (a correction of a knee problem affecting mainly smaller breed cats).

Parasite Control

Cats can acquire parasite infestations, both internally and externally. We utilize the most recent medications, treatments and preventatives that are available to manage these parasites.

Internal parasites include Heartworms, Hookworms, Roundworms, Whipworms, Tapeworms, and Coccidia. Each parasite can be treated specifically after being diagnosed by one of our veterinarians.

External parasites include fleas, ticks, ear mites, sarcoptic mange, and demodex mites. These can be prevented and controlled using various products and methods. In addition to concerns about the parasites themselves, several of these parasites are the cause (or carrier) of other diseases, such as Lyme Disease.

Pharmacy and Prescription Services

Medications are often necessary for the optimum care of your pet. We have an in-house pharmacy, meaning we can tailor our treatment to the need of your specific pet. If your pet should need something that we do not have in our clinic, we can order that medication quickly, ship it to your house, or script it out at your preferred pharmacy.

Physical Examinations

Professional physical examinations are the most important aspect of quality pet care. Because animals age faster than their owners, examinations are needed more frequently than once a year. We perform a comprehensive examination on each pet prior to performing any procedures or treatments. Many diseases can be detected prior to the development of damaging clinical signs. Sometimes a small problem is an indication of a larger disorder or disease process. We also offer specialized examinations, such as ocular (eye) examinations, orthopedic examinations, external parasite exams, neurological exams, and many others.

Preventative Health Care

Preventative health care is more than just vaccinations. We strive to educate clients on proper vaccination protocols, heartworm prophylaxis, nutritional support, and weight management. Preventative health care is the best way to achieve a long and happy life for your pet.

Referral Service

Occasionally a pet may require the care of a specialist. Veterinary specialists are certified and trained in specific areas of medicine or surgery. We have a relationship with several referral institutions. These facilities offer specialized care in internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, surgery, dermatology, radiology, ultrasonography, cardiology, and oncology.

Senior Wellness Program

Once a pet reaches the age of seven (even earlier in some breeds), they are entering their senior years. The health of your pet can change very rapidly during these senior years. Early disease detection is pertinent to quality of life. Frequent testing helps to detect disease as early as possible. Recommended tests include a complete blood count and blood health profile, urinalysis, fecal examinations, EKG, and glaucoma screening. Other tests are recommended depending on the evaluation of your pet.

Surgical Services

Seville Wadsworth Veterinary Clinic can perform simple procedures in the office, but is mainly an out patient clinic.

The other locations feature an exclusive surgical suite where we perform all of our surgical procedures. Procedures that we perform include, but are not limited to: Spay, neuter, declawing, dewclaw removal, tumor removal, biopsy, ocular surgery, cesarean sections, abdominal surgery, and orthopedic surgery. We are also one of the more progressive surgical practices in the area, offering anal gland removal and other more delicate soft tissue surgical procedures.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasound technology can be used for so much more than just diagnosis of pregnancy. We use ultrasound to highlight the internal structures using sound waves. We are able to visualize the structure and makeup of the liver, kidney, bladder and other organs, and can detect some structures that are not visible on radiographs. Our state of the art ultrasound machine allows us to visualize many of the smaller tissues and organs within the body. Ultrasound can be used to obtain a guided biopsy of tumors or a urinary sample directly from the bladder.

Vaccination Services

Many people think about vaccinations when they think about their wellness care. There are many components to a wellness program, but vaccinations do provide one of the best lines of defense against many diseases. We carefully select our vaccination lines from among many top vaccination providers. This allows us to offer the best vaccines, with the lowest risk to your pet. We also follow the latest in vaccination guidelines, which often coincide with those published by the American Animal Hospital Association.

Vaccinations that we recommend for cats include:

  • Rhinotracheitis
  • Calicivirus
  • Panleukopenia
  • Feline Leukemia
  • Rabies Virus
